Yosifu
Wild artist living in the UK
Amis artist Yosifu was born in the Matai’an community in Yuli, Hualien, and is currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is one of the very few artists in Europe who are active on the international art scene with Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples as the subject of his work, and is a distinguished speaker who has been invited to TEDxTaipei several times.
In recent years, he has been actively involved in and attentive to environmental issues, and has often boldly collaborated across disciplines with the fashion world. Alongside continually breaking new ground in his work, he continues to showcase new Indigenous contemporary art in the art world.
The works break free from the conventions of traditional Indigenous art. Though they speak of childhood memories of the artist’s ancestral homeland and its ceremonial culture, their bold colors and vivid themes brim with powerful visual impact. Freewheeling, provocative brushstrokes transform tradition into bright, vibrant hues of fashion!

Q & A
Q: How do you start your day?
A: Starting the day with happiness changes the whole mood. Tell yourself in the mirror, “You’re really great! You’re really handsome!” Then learn to forget the things that make you unhappy.
Q: Where do you usually hang out?
A: The field ridges and seaside in the Hualien tribal community.
Q: Which restaurant do you go to most often?
A: Hot Stir-Fry 100. It has the most Taiwanese flavor, with a wide selection of delicious food and a relaxed, lively atmosphere. Every time I come back from the UK, I head straight there to eat.
Q: What do you do for fun after work?
A: Watching movies and going to the gym. Movies bring together all the arts and are the most direct way for artists to enrich their inner lives. Working out is, of course, an investment in myself. I’m an idol, hahaha!
Q: What’s a book you’ve read recently? What insights or impressions did you take away after finishing it?
A: In the autobiography of American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, she went to a very rugged and desolate part of New Mexico in search of inspiration for her art. I really admire her courage and adventurous spirit! In life, you have to be willing to take risks rather than settle into your comfort zone.
Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
A: Yuli Market in Hualien. It reflects the authentic everyday lives of ordinary people. The lively, overlapping calls of vendors feel so welcoming and bustling—and you can even sample the food! How wonderful!
Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
A: Design and uniqueness.
Q: What is your impression of the hotels under Taipei Hotel?
A: The service quality is excellent, and the hotel’s minimalist, stylish design is a great fit for the modern urban aesthetic.
