Contemporary artist Huang Po-Hsun

Using “abundance” and “freedom” as the two central themes of his artistic practice, he explores the relationship between himself and his living environment, portraying a world that is both abundant and lonely, with vivid, colorful forms. His works often convey a buoyant sense of drift, a quiet presence of solitude, and an ineffable uncertainty, alongside sumptuous colors and the humanistic spirit of the East.

His works continue to receive support from collectors across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and he is invited to exhibit and create year after year. In recent years, Huang Po-Hsun’s works have not only benefited from the support of national-level collection programs but have also appeared at international art fairs around the world, establishing him as a contemporary artist with both artistic sensibility and creative prowess.

Q & A

Q: How do you start your day?
First, of course, I sleep in until I wake up naturally (with a sweet smile!). After getting up, I drink a big glass of warm water, followed by coffee. Then I reply to emails and work messages. Next, I tidy up the palette from the night before and start painting.

Q: Where do you usually hang out?
Four or five days a week, I go for a run around the nearby riverside park in the evening. Watching the last light of the setting sun always brings me a sense of calm.

Q: Which restaurant do you go to most often?
After my evening run, I head to Banqiao’s Yumin Street Night Market for dinner inspiration! It’s along my route home, with plenty of choices and great food. I don’t have a regular go-to; I usually try to find something I haven’t eaten before. There’s a stall that sells carrot juice or starfruit juice, and I think it’s pretty good!

Q: What do you do for fun after work?
As a full-time artist, my life and work are intertwined, so it’s hard to define what “getting off work” means. Before the pandemic, after completing a body of work, I would go to a nearby second-run theater and watch movies all day. These days, I watch a little something on a streaming platform before bed each night.

Q: AI technology is advancing rapidly, and it can create many works in a short time. Do you think AI will replace artists?
It’s hard to say what the future will bring, but for now, it seems unlikely. Still, perhaps human art history will change through the involvement of AI, just as the invention of photography two hundred years ago changed art history.

Q: For artists who are just starting out and have an unstable income, what advice would you give when it’s hard to balance ideals and making a living?
If you need to be sensible and get a part-time job, then do it—surviving is important!! Earning a living through part-time work while sustaining your creative practice is a necessary path for most artists who are still struggling to make ends meet.

Q: What’s a book you’ve read recently? What insights or impressions did you have after reading it?
A while ago, I was reading Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, about how humanity has evolved and changed from ancient times to the present, and how that has transformed our way of life. Recently, I’ve been rereading some of Haruki Murakami’s novels. His steady, finely detailed, lingering, yet somewhat fantastical style is quite similar to what I’ve been trying to express in my recent work.

Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
Night markets! When night falls, you can find all kinds of fun and fascinating things there~

Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
Staying somewhere new and taking a stroll around the neighborhood always makes me feel like I can start a new life or embark on a new experience. No matter how many times I do it, it always lifts my spirits~

Q: What is your impression of the hotels under Taipei Inn?
Such a wonderful team—especially the people who handle the artworks. They go out of their way to find great pieces to decorate the hotel, and they’re so respectful of the artist’s ideas throughout the process. That’s truly rare! Of course, I’m also very grateful that this collaboration has brought us together as wonderful friends!
